Learn How Good It Can Feel -
Lend A Helping Hand

Throughout the United States and here in central Nebraska, Red Cross volunteers help save lives - providing lifesaving services and leadership and helping our neighbors to prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.

Red Cross volunteers represent our communities, we speak many languages, are all different ages and ethnicities. Join us!

Red Cross volunteers:

  • Provide Community Disaster Education and First Aid, CPR, swimming, babysitter preparedness and other classes.
  • Work as nurses offering expertise, care and compassion.
  • Facilitate emergency communications between military personnel and their families.
  • Provide community-based services for families who are homeless.
  • Donate professional experience in accounting, fund raising, public relations, administration, human resources, and information technology.
  • Fill leadership roles at the Chapter, including serving on advisory committees and the Board of Directors.

No matter what your specialty or available time, we have a role to serve your interests. When you volunteer your time and talents to the Red Cross, the benefits are many, including:

  • Career development
  • Personal growth
  • National & international volunteer assignments
  • CNE opportunities
  • Leadership development
  • Networking with like-minded, caring, colleagues
  • Opportunities to teach courses

HERE'S HOW YOU PLAY YOUR PART

Volunteer Opportunities

The American Red Cross Volunteer Program provides support to blood donors by serving coffee and treats and calling donors regarding apointments to give blood. Disaster services volunteers lend a listening ear, and distribute care kits and other meaningful tasks. Support the office by volunteering one to five days per week with light record keeping and clerical support.

  • Clerical Assistance is needed in the Red Cross volunteer office. Volunteers with MS Word experience are highly desired
  • Leadership Volunteers work with the Volunteer Specialist to lead various programs

Disaster Team Member

The Disaster Team's purpose is to place trained volunteers at the scene of a disaster within minutes of its occurrence. The team provides immediate identifiable emergency services such as food, clothing, shelter and health services to disaster victims. Each team member will be trained in First Aid, CPR, Damage Assessment, Shelter Management and other introductory courses. Disaster team volunteers must be at least 18 years old, be in good health, have their own transportation and telephone, and must be willing to respond as needed when they are on duty. Training is provided.

Disaster
Health and Disaster Mental Health Services
Disasters happen usually when least expected and Red Cross volunteers respond! Every week Red Cross Disaster Volunteers are helping families in Hall, Hamilton, Merrick, Greely, Adams and other counties in central Nebraska. Whether it is a single-family fire or flooding or a tornado, Red Cross Disaster Volunteers are providing immediate food, shelter and clothing to those in need.

No previous experience is needed to be a Disaster Volunteer. Training is provided.

Health & Safety Instructor

You can become a Red Cross volunteer instructor in one or more of the following courses and help people throughout the community prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Contact hours are available for RNs and LPNs for most of our instructor courses. The minimum age for instructors is 17 years old. The courses are:

  • Standard First Aid
  • CPR (Adult and Infant/Child)
  • HIV/AIDS Prevention Education
  • Babysitting
  • Lifeguarding

Special Events Volunteer

This is a wonderful opportunity for people who want to volunteer every now and then. Our events (like the annual Chili Cook-Off) are always fun!

Special Projects Volunteer

Special projects volunteers work on a variety of projects from folding and stapling our newsletters to assembling comfort care kits. Special project volunteers provide valued support so these tasks can be completed as quickly and cost effectively as possible. Hours are flexible.

Blood Services

We are always looking for a good telephone voice to help us recruit blood donors to schedule apointments. This opportunity can be done in the day or evening. In addition we need volunteers to work at the registration desk and cantine during blood donation hours. We also accept food donations from businesses and organizations to serve at blood drives.

Groups
We welcome all kinds of groups such as churches, companies, civic organizations, schools, or even just groups of friends. Groups can help with either special projects or special events. It's a fun way to help the community and the Red Cross.

For local volunteer opportunities visit redcross.volunteermatch.org or call our office today.
